What is a temperature blanket?
Hi everyone!
This year, I'm embarking on a vibrant and cozy crafting journey: a Crochet Temperature Blanket for 2024. This is my very first temperature blanket, and as I've been diving into the planning and preparation, I realized there's a lot to share about this process. So, let's unravel the yarn together!
What Is a Temperature Blanket?
Simply put, a temperature blanket is a way of documenting the temperature of each day over a selected period (usually a year) through crochet. Each temperature range is assigned a specific yarn color, so as you crochet day by day or week by week, the blanket transforms into a colorful mosaic that reflects the year's climate.

As I discovered, this isn't just about picking a color based on the day's mood; it's about the meticulous representation of weather through art. It can represent the weather where you live for the span of a year, or even the weather where you've been throughout the year - which can be super interesting if you're a traveler!
I've stumbled upon some fantastic examples and guides that have offered a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. What would we do without our fellow crafting community sharing their wealth of knowledge? You won't need to Google far to find some very beautiful work out there.
The Debate of Rows vs. Squares
In my research, I found that temperature blankets could be made in rows or squares. While both are beautiful, I'm drawn to rows for their simplicity and the clear linear progression they represent. It feels like each line is a story of the day, neatly folding into the next, creating a timeline of the year.
Why Rows for Me?
Rows give a sense of continuity and growth, much like a diary entry, each day building on the last. This method seems more straightforward and visually compelling for my first temperature project. Plus, the idea of watching the blanket grow linearly, day by day, adds an element of excitement and anticipation to my routine.
Color and Temperature
Choosing a color palette is one of the most exciting parts! I'm inclined towards a neutral palette to match my home décor, but the possibilities are endless. Each temperature range, whether it's chilly blues for cold days or warm reds for heatwaves, will correspond to a specific color.
I'll be charting out a color guide based on the average temperatures in my home in the Bay Area of California, considering our unique climate.
Duration and Dedication
This blanket will represent an entire year, from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024. It's a long-term commitment, but I'm ready for the challenge and the reward of seeing a year in yarn at the end.
As I make my way through this project, I'll share updates, insights, and maybe even some changes as I adapt to the process. I hope my journey inspires you to consider your own temperature blanket or simply follow along as I tackle this year-long endeavor.
I'd love to hear from anyone else who has embarked on this or a similar project! What tips do you have, or what stories do your blankets tell? Share in the comments below! I'd be keen to learn from your experience.
Until the next update, keep those hooks ready and the yarn flowing. Here's to a year of warmth, color, and creativity!
Happy crocheting!

Love this concept and project! You might be the one person who gets me back to crocheting, Gayle! I haven’t done it since I was a teenager, and have been thinking of getting back to either this or knitting again. 2024 is definitely promising to be a creative year! Love to you and Captain K. ❤️❤️❤️
Fantastic project. I have a new app that will save time on your temperature blanket. It fetches the temperatures for you! It's live on the Apple Store - search Temp Blanket. If you're interested in testing upcoming versions, let me know and I can give you access to early releases that include more functionality. The current pre-release build has support for 2 and 3 degree temperature increments, global locations, any address/zip+4, average temp in the iPad version, etc. Tempblnkt@gmail.com @temp.blanket on Instagram. Enjoy your project!
